Fight tight Pro Stock takes the center stage as leaders NHRA for Atlanta

The final round thriller between rookie Vincent Nobile (left) and Rodger Brogdon two weeks at Houston continued to support the assertion that the extremely narrow by side race in the category of Stock of the NHRA Pro 200 mph is as good as it gets in motorsports.

The first qualifying run to the last pass in eliminations, NHRA Pro Stock race proved as cutthroat as it gets in the world of the automobile, as a winner or loser is often agreed by less than a thousandth of a second.

Second generation racer Nobile beat Brogdon by a margin of. 0016sec, which translates into just under six inches with two cars travelling at this speed. Brogdon was confident, he had enough in the tank of performance for its first victory, but Nobile had other plans and held off the coast in a very close finish of the photo.

Fans attending the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern nationals, from 13 to 15 may at Atlanta Dragway can expect the same kind of factory NHRA division race doorhandle doorhandle hot rod when the full Throttle drag racing series rolls in Georgia of the North for the sixth race of the season. Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock motorcycle) are the winners of event defend. The "Professor" of Pro Stock, winner of five times event Warren Johnson of nearby Buford, GA, which has six titles of champion of the world to its assets with 97 career victories, participate in the event and honored that the legend NHRA official event the 60th anniversary of the NHRA.

As Brogdon now understands all too well, thinking that you have a winning hand in the end is not to do the work day in this category of horse racing issues. Reaction time of the almost perfect Brogdon of Caine has been improved by beginning of 0.007 stellar Nobile. Although Racers Edge Pontiac GXP of Brogdon was a faster tick all the way down the runway, rapid departure of Nobile green light made the difference at the end.

"If I offered a bet to 1,000 fans of drag racing that gave them a Caine (reaction time) and run the third fastest of the day in the final round, virtually each of them would take this bet; Hell I'd take this bet, "said Brogdon. "(In Houston) Unfortunately, this was simply not enough." Nobile and the Mountain View tire guys we had given all the one race that we will still talk about when the season is over with. »

Nobile, the sensation of 19 years of New York, who came to the final of three towers in the first five races and certainly has emerged among the frontrunners for the road car Club for the price of the future if this is the World Championshiphas been extremely fast at the wheel of his Mountain View Nick Mitsos Dodge Avenger-owned tire. The son of veteran driver John Nobile, Vincent grew up around sport and is paid in the nature of the class.

"It is crazy how competitive Pro Stock is," said the young Nobile. "Every driver is great here." There are no easy sleeves. »

World Pro Stock four times field Greg Anderson, who led the Summit Racing Pontiac GXP and won three times at Atlanta Dragway, said category has evolved to the point where just having the fastest car is enough.

"Difficult competition is right now, you must have the complete package," Anderson said. "You will go not to win because you have more power, or a better car facility or even a better driver." You must put all three together you want to get the Wally with no room for error. »

Once dominated by artists such as Bob Glidden, Lee Shepherd, Johnson and the tandem Summit Racing of Anderson and Jason line more recently, NHRA Pro Stock these days of the race turns out to be filled with a bit of parity. In five races so far, it has five different no. 1 qualifiers and four different winners. The line is the only driver who repeated a victory, winning the first two races of the season. The field of the world 2006, said there are so many factors involved in the eliminations and each particular race that win races these days is a difficult task.

"Really no way set to win one of these races, as circumstances change constantly,", said Line, a former NASCAR for Joe Gibbs Racing engine manufacturer. "Sometimes, you need to win with your right foot using all the power at your disposal, other times, you have to win with your left foot first, leaving the starting line, while occasionally just summarizes luck.". In all cases, everything comes down to do a better job than your competitors adapting to the Racecourse and conditions. »

Other drivers to watch in Pro Stock include Erica Enders, who seeks to become the first woman to win a race NHRA Pro Stock, Greg Stanfield, who finished second in the standings point last year, 2009 field Mike Edwards, who is still a threat to gagneret Allen Johnson, who took a slow start but hopes to turn its season at Atlanta Dragway, where he won his second race of career in 2002.

Top fuel, Del Worsham holds the lead with three victories so far in his Al-Anabi Racing drag racing. Worsham teammate, defending race winner and the world field Dixon, hopes to make his first visit of the season by winning the circle at this event. A strong field of contenders will also races for the trophy, including the field seven times world Tony Schumacher, who has never won in Atlanta, with a group of former winners of this track, including Antron Brown, Doug Kalitta, Brandon Bernstein and Morgan Lucas.

Mike Neff was drawing double duty this season in a car used Funny head of team and driver for the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. His hard work is paying as the native of Southern California leads to the classification of point with one victory in two final rounds. His teammate, car driver Club Mustang Hight, is the second with two victories. Other pre-race favorites include seven times Atlanta Dragway winner John Force, winner of the 2009 Jack Beckman event, finalist in the 2010 Matt Hagan series, twice field world Cruz Pedregon and Ron Capps, who again tuner Tim Richards the bark of the NAPA Dodge Charger.

Tim Richards resumed the role of team leader for Ron Capps

Don Schumacher Racing, announced Thursday that Tim Richards has joined its team as the team leader for the NAPA Auto parts Dodge Charger R/T Funny car driven by Ron Capps and will be part of the team this weekend at the 24th NHRA spring nationals annual Royal purple Raceway outside of Houston.  He replaces John Medlen, who resigned as of the week last of DSR.

"History of Tim is exemplary," said Schumacher.  "He won the Championship during his brilliant career and I believe that it can provide technical expertise and leadership in Championship-quality to the car of NAPA in the circle of the winner on a consistent basis."

"Based on all that Tim has achieved at all levels of drag racing, we are confident that he will be able to lead NAPA team to success in the short term."

The 67 years Richards, who had retired after the season of NHRA Full Throttle drag racing series 2008 after eight years of tuning for Kenny Bernstein Racing and Joe Amato 20 collected six Championships and 81 national event WINS in a career of 35-over-year. He is happy about the challenge of return drag racing and tuning of a funny car for the team.

"When you have been involved in drag racing as long as we have, it is not something you can walk away easily," said Richards.  "This is not as retired from Sears Roebuck or a job like that." It is something you see on television during the season, reminders are still there.

"This occasion broke out when the two of us (wife Kim, who has worked side by side with Richards for decades) may be thought that we should return to work.". Sometimes, just at the right time.

"The question is: you are the challenge or not?". I believe that we are. Any time you have a major sponsor as NAPA on the car, the pressure is on. You are supposed to do well - it's as simple as that. »

Kim will be alongside Tim, but in an informal basis, at least since the beginning. They will spend the majority of the end of the week of observation, consulting, familiar and working with Rahn Tobler and Tommy DeLago, two counts of crew DSR which will be split duty between their main roles (setting Jack Beckman and funny cars Matt Hagan)(, respectively) and the preparation of the NAPA car.

"Houston, we will try to see how the teams and how everyone is working," he said. "We must learn the normal sequence of operations within DSR."

"One great thing about this organization is that it works as a great team not seven individual ones. This means that I can get help from a few great crew chiefs, such as Rahn and Tommy, not only this weekend, but now as well.

"It is a great opportunity." I have a great driver Ron Capps to work with, and it has already helped me much. »

Stay Tonglet force, Schumacher, from the outset in the eliminations of Houston

John Force moved to within one of NHRA Pro Stock great Warren Johnson's all-time No. 1 qualifying record by racing to his third consecutive top qualifying performance of the season Saturday at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston. The other three top qualifiers from Friday also held on to their positions as Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Ronnie Humphrey (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) will lead their categories into Sunday's 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Force earned the 137th No. 1 qualifying position of his Funny Car career with his Friday pass of 4.097 seconds at 310.27mph in his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang as slightly warmer weather conditions prevented the majority of racers in all categories from improving their performances during Saturday's two sessions. Force will face rookie Brian Thiel in the first round of eliminations as the 15-time world champ is seeking his 133rd career victory and eighth at this track. A win by Force or either of his teammates would give the John Force Racing team its 200th NHRA victory.

“My team has given me a good car and it's going down the race track,” Force said. “The track got a little tricky out there. I still drive my car with a brake handle and with my foot. When the crew chief tells me ‘I don't know if it will go,' that's when I get excited because I know it's in my hands and I can make some magic and get it through there. You look at some of these cars out here who got in the show. A big high-horsepower car ain't what you need unless we get a cold front roll in here. You could call this a match racer's race. The big dogs may step up if the cold front comes through and everybody tries to run (low numbers). Otherwise it could be anybody's race day.”

In Top Fuel, U.S. Army dragster driver Schumacher posted his second No. 1 of the season and 63rd of his career based on his Friday run of 3.817 seconds at a track record speed of 323.81 mph. Schumacher will meet Troy Buff in the opening round.

With similar weather conditions expected for Sunday, two-time Houston winner Schumacher is looking forward to the challenge.

“We all have the same race track so if one (crew chief) figures it out before the others that team will have a good chance of winning the race,” Schumacher said. “Tomorrow is going to be about awesome battles. You are going to see a lot of people have to pedal the cars. When two guys blow (their tires) off at the tree it's pretty cool. It's game on. At the end of the day I have an incredible amount of faith in my team. We are trying to get a trophy. Those pewter trophies are looking good on everyone else's shelf but I have a shelf too and I need to fill it. We're just going to go out there and motor it down there and get some data in the first couple of rounds and go fast later.”

In Pro Stock, journeyman racer Ronnie Humphrey earned his first career No. 1 qualifying position with his performance of 6.571 at 211.16 from yesterday. Humphrey, who drives the Summit/Genuine Hotrod Hardware Pontiac GXP, will face first round opponent Steve Kent, a rookie in the 200 mph category who is making his first career start.

“This is a dream that's come true for our team and it is a team effort,” Humphrey said. “We were No. 2 in the final session today and now we need to get into race day and make it happen. I came to this race with a different plan. I quit thinking. I want to thank Jason Line because he told me to stop thinking about it so much and just go up there and have fun. Now we just have to get relaxed and go up there on race day and make some good runs.”

Tonglet claimed the second No. 1 qualifying position of his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle, as his Friday effort of 6.849 at 195.45 on his Nitro Fish Suzuki remained at the top of the 16-bike order. Tonglet will race veteran rider Steve Johnson in the first round.

“Qualifying ended on a high note when we stayed number one,” Tonglet said. “It felt good to have a performance like that at our home track. Conditions were a lot different than Friday. I'm glad we were able to capitalize on that, because it was really hot and humid Saturday. We had a bunch of people hanging around our pit area, and we're expecting more on Sunday. We're hoping to have a long day.”
